Some people want shaved ice in the winter. Some people want coffee in the summer.

And some want both year-round.

J.D. Young, owner of Funky Monkeys Shaved Ice, has just launched a business that will please all the people. A week ago, he opened Funky Monkey Shaved Ice & Coffee in a portable building set up outside the Home Depot at 3350 N. Woodlawn that will be open all year long and will serve both the shaved ice he’s known for plus coffee and pastries, which he’s just added.

Young, who says his regulars are mostly people who live in the neighborhood, said he gets calls all winter from shaved ice cravers who can’t wait until summer. So far, all those callers have visited to get a fix, and his coffee customers have been people who don’t want to battle Rock Road to get a cup.

Young has been operating his portable shaved ice trailer seasonally outside the Home Depot for two years, but now, he’ll move that west to the intersection of 21st and 119th streets, he said. The trailer will open in a couple of months when the weather warms up and will remain just a summer-time business.

Last year, Young also added a mobile shaved ice truck that he takes around town for private and charity events. He also drives it around neighborhoods, ice cream truck style. It operates year-round as well.

The new business has a drive-through and offers 80 flavors of shaved ice, from banana to strawberry daiquiri to margarita. The coffee menu includes espresso, iced drinks, lattes, mochas and more, and the pastries are provided by Sugar Sisters Bakery.

The spring hours for the new business are 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. Summer hours will be longer, Young said.
