Let the January openings commence.

On Friday, Wichita’s west side will add two new businesses when Ecclesia Coffee & Community opens at at 7130 W. Maple and the long-awaited Planet Sub opens at 10330 W. Central.

Ecclesia, which is in the same strip center at Maple and Ridge that has McAlister’s Deli, is owned by Rochelle Stroh. She envisions the shop as a hangout for high schoolers and young adults, she said, and she plans to serve a full menu of coffee drinks, tea, cupcakes, chocolate chip cookies and peanut butter fudge. She describes the decor as a mixture of soft elements with an industrial urban feel: wood floors, light walls, a black ceiling and exposed duct work.

On Friday, the shop will be open from 3 to 10 p.m. Then on Monday, Ecclesia will begin its regular hours: 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays.

Friday also should be the day the new Planet Sub opens in the former Metro Grill spot at Central and Maize. Managers expected to be open by now, but a few delays with contractors have set things back. A manager said he was 99 percent sure Friday would be the day. The shop will be open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.
