The new Hardee’s at 21st and Amidon is open.

The restaurant, which sits in New Leaf Plaza in front of the A-OK Pawn Shop and Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market, opened on Saturday.

Wichita has been a Hardee’s-free zone for 20 years. In 1995, six Hardee’s restaurants in central Kansas were closed and turned into Burger Kings.

I have several friends who grew up on Hardee’s and are overjoyed about its return. One friend claims the breakfast biscuits and “hash rounds” sustained her through high school. I stopped in this morning to check out the new restaurant, which is slick and clean with a modern look. I ordered the cinnamon -n- raisin biscuits, which are frosting-drenched pillows of heaven. The Hardee’s menu also includes char-broiled burgers, chicken sandwiches, grilled burritos and fries.

The new Hardee’s, which has free Wi-Fi, is open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays and from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. For more information, call 316-425-5393.
