Wichita loses a whole lot of fried chicken restaurants

Wichita has a lot less fried chicken than it did a week ago.

It appears that Church’s Chicken, a fried chicken chain that recently had as many as five stores operating in the city, has closed them all. I’ve received messages from readers, found posts on Facebook, and I drove past the Church’s at 3808 E. Harry today and found it locked up tight. Several customers were pulling in the lot, peering in the window then driving away. No one answers the phone at any of the other stores. I have left a message with the corporate office and the local franchisee seeking confirmation.

Meanwhile, Bud E. Rooster’s, the fried chicken finger restaurant at 8918 W. 21st St. that opened in summer 2013, also has closed. A sign on the door says the restaurant is closed and thanks customers for their patronage over the years. There’s also a sign offering the space for lease. Loyal customer Mike Wohler agreed to let me borrow his pictures of the closed restaurant, which he mourned on Facebook over the weekend. I’ve also left a message with the Bud E. Rooster’s owners
