Construction on this Wichita restaurant stopped last year. Now, there’s movement.
An eagle-eyed Eagle reader recently noticed there’s finally something happening at the Popeyes building at 21st and Amidon.
Back in November 2023, a local broker shared the news that the former Hardee’s building at 2053 N. Amidon would become the new home of the Popeyes that had operated at 1211 N. Broadway. That restaurant closed after 37 years at the end of 2023.
Popeyes signs went up on the building at 21st and Amidon last year, but until recently, there’ve been no other indications that work was progressing. A year ago, franchisee Abdul Hamideh told me that he was waiting for equipment to arrive before he continued construction. After that, he quit responding to messages.
Recently, though, a big dumpster appeared in front of the restaurant, and the reader who messaged me also reported seeing electricians going in and out of the building on Monday.
I reached out to the broker who has been keeping me informed about the building, and he said that the new Popeyes should be up and running “in the coming months.”
Also, I finally heard back from Hamideh. He told me I’d be the first to know when he chose an opening date.
Hamideh also has the Popeyes restaurants at 3131 N. Rock Road, 1623 S. Seneca, 4232 W. Central and 1350 N. Hillside. (Different franchisees — Mitesh Patel and his son, Sumit Patel of Mid-CHKN LLC — own the Popeyes at 29th and Maize Road.)
The old Popeyes building on North Broadway remains vacant, but its sign has been directing people to the restaurant on West Central.
I’ll keep you updated on the progress.
