New fried chicken chain known for its hot yeast rolls about to open in Wichita
Texas-based fried chicken chain Golden Chick announced more than a year ago its plans to enter the Wichita market. And over the past months, locals have watched its building go up at Harry and Webb.
Now, the restaurant finally has an opening date. A spokesperson for the chain said today that the restaurant will put on an invite-only soft opening on Monday and will welcome the public in on Wednesday, June 25.
The restaurant, which is in the vein of Popeyes and KFC, sits just south of the Taco Bell near Harry and Webb. The address is 1705 S. Webb Road.
The restaurant chain, which has 240 restaurants across Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Florida and Mississippi. The Wichita store will be its first in Kansas.
It serves bone-in chicken and chicken tenders that are marinated for 24 hours, hand battered, hand breaded and fried fresh multiple times a day. But the restaurant is really known for a decision it made in 2006 to add fresh-baked yeast rolls to its menu. Instead of biscuits, the owners decided they would proof and bake hot, fresh yeast rolls all day that it could serve with and use as buns for chicken sandwiches.
Fans love the rolls so much, owners have said, that the restaurant also sells them by the dozen. That option is particularly popular at Thanksgiving and Christmas.
The menu, which can be seen at goldenchick.com/menus, also includes wings, southern-fried catfish, roasted chicken, salads, a chicken salad sandwich and sides such as mashed potatoes, fries, green beans, fried okra, dirty rice, mac and cheese and cole slaw.
The local franchisee of Golden Chick hopes to open several of the restaurants in the Wichita area and is particularly interested in Derby.
The Wichita restaurant will also have a drive though. Its hours will be 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.
