This Wichita restaurant is introducing Wichita to a growing trend: Yemini coffee

Wichita clearly loves coffee, as evidenced by the dozens of coffee shops that operate all over town and seem to have no trouble drawing customers.

But coffee drinkers may not know that a new type of coffee has just been added to Wichita’s list of options, and it’s something different from the standard lattes, mochas and macchiatos.

The partners who own 360 Deli & Grill at 11309 E. Kellogg recently accomplished a goal they’ve had since they opened in March of last year: They’ve added a list of coffee options to their menu.

Now, customers who stop in for the deli’s breakfast sandwiches, bagels, burritos and tacos also can get a jolt of caffeine.

In addition to the standard espresso drinks American palates are accustomed to, though, this menu features seven specialty drinks that are popular in Mediterranean countries — specifically in Yemen, the home country of 360 Deli & Grill owners Faisal Assaedi, Muqnea Elaya and Naseem Allahabi.

Yemen is also, Assaedi points out, the country where coffee was first cultivated and developed into the beans people use today. And coffee shops that focus on Mediterranean drinks are popping up across the United States, he said, including by chains like Haraz Coffee and Qahwah House. Such shops are especially popular in Michigan.

“We wanted to do coffee, and we brought in the regular coffees that everybody knows,” Assaedi said. “But Middle Eastern coffee is getting super popular. You go to Michigan, Texas, Colorado, California, there are coffee shops opening up literally every single day, especially by people from my country.”

Almost all of the Mediterranean drinks at 360 Deli & Grill the drinks are made with spices like cardamom, nutmeg, ginger and cinnamon. And they’re all served hot.

The menu includes Turkish coffee, which many people are familiar with, but there’s also a drink called the Sanaa City, which is a medium roast coffee with cardamom that is named for Yemen’s capital city. The Mofawar is a medium roast served with cardamom and cream. The Malaky Royal is a light roast with cardamom, ginger, cinnamon and cream.

Assaedi said his favorite drink is the Qisher, made with coffee husks that are sun dried then ground into a tangy coffee. It’s the drink many choose when it’s time to break fast during Ramadan, he said.

He describes Yemini coffee as pure, powerful and habit forming. And it takes a bit more time to prepare each drink.

“It’s stronger,” he said. “It gets you more addicted to it.”

The new coffee menu also includes lattes, Americanos, flat whites, mochas, matcha lattes and caramel macchiatos, and the deli has also included on the new menu a line of “refreshers” made in flavors like mango, dragon fruit, strawberry, matcha strawberry and mojito.

The restaurant also serves made-to-order deli sandwiches made with Boar’s Head deli meats and cheeses plus burgers, prepared salads and tacos. It’s known for its chopped cheese sandwich, a New York City favorite.

Its hours are 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

The partners are getting close to opening a second 360 Deli & Grill near 701 W. 21st St., and Assaedi said they plan to eventually add the Mediterranean coffees to that menu as well. The owners hope to have the new restaurant open in early July.
