The first day of school looms, but Wichita kids still have a little time left to enjoy the summer. Perhaps they’d enjoy their final days of freedom even more at a couple of food-centric, kid-friendly events coming up.

On Monday, the Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland will celebrate National S’mores Day with an event open to all K-12 girls and their families. The come-and-go event is from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Wichita Girl Scout Office, 360 Lexington Road. Attendees are invited to make their own S’mores, eat free hot dogs and meet Miss Kansas (and former Girl Scout) Hannah Wagner. Anyone who signs up for Girl Scouts by Sept. 1 also will be automatically entered into a drawing to win tickets to the Taylor Swift concert on Sept. 21 at the Sprint Center in Kansas City. They can sign up at Monday’s event or online at kansasgirlscouts.org. (By the way, the Hershey’s website has a pretty awesome S’mores retrospective that also includes a bunch of good S’mores recipes.)

Then, on Friday, Aug. 14, Cero’s Candies at 3429 E. Douglas will be hosting its annual ice cream social. From 5 to 7 p.m., people can buy homemade ice cream for $1.50 a scoop and kids can participate in a craft project. The event also will have live music from Raleigh Hinman. The store will have chairs set up on its front lawn, but people are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, too. For more information, call 316-264-5002.
