Wichita coffee shop taps movie-making barista to help launch a monthly film series
Andrew Gough is a coffee guy, but he’s also an idea guy, and he’s always coming up with something new he wants to do in Wichita.
His latest idea has resulted in a new monthly film series, which is happening on the second Thursday of each month. Gough, the owner of Reverie Coffee Roasters at 2202 E. Douglas, has titled the series Reverie Impact Cinema, and he’s staging it in partnership with Tallgrass Film Association at the Tallgrass Film Center, 120 E. First St.
This month’s film is “Meet Me at Magic Hour,” which was made by Reverie barista and Wichita State University film student Monica Honey. The film, which was released at last year’s Tallgrass Film Festival, tells the story of a young person at their mother’s funeral who re-imagines their problems through different movie genres.
Honey is also the point person for the film series, Gough said, and she’s choosing the movies. Gough said that after he saw Honey’s film at Tallgrass, he started thinking about ways his shop could help inspire different parts of the community to make Wichita a better place. He came up with a series of films that would highlight different topics then give proceeds from screenings to local charitable organizations.
The first film in the series, which was shown in March, was 2017’’s “Lady Bird,” and proceeds from the screening went to ICT SOS. Proceeds from Thursday’s film will go to Wild Flower Community School.
May’s film will be the 2019 comedy “The Farewell” and will be shown on May 8.
Tickets to the films are $12 at tallgrassfilmcenter.eventive.org. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the films start at 7 p.m. The theater has only 30 seats, so Gough advises that people get tickets as soon as possible.
