Labor Day weekend in Wichita will be full of food-focused events
Labor Day weekend 2024 will be a tasty one in Wichita: Quite a few food-centric events are on the books.
If you get hungry over the long weekend, here are a few places to get fed:
Hatch Green ChileFest
9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Johnson’s Garden Centers, 2707 W. 13th St.
Johnson’s Garden Center has decided to end its annual Iron ChileHead beerfest, so that won’t be happening this year. But that doesn’t mean that the business won’t be selling its hatch green chiles, which Johnson’s owner Marty Johnson travels to New Mexico every year to retrieve for Wichita. On Saturday, the center on West 13th Street will be putting on a Hatch Green Chile Fest — fire-roasting peppers on demand and offering customers samples.
Customers also will be able to get lunch at the center’s green chile burger bar, and the Drink Local Truck will be there with chile-infused beer. At 11 a.m., Johnson will demonstrate how to make his green chile verde and how to prep and store peppers. The owners also will be selling Iron ChileHead merchandise from years past as well as bags of fresh or frozen chiles.
Nomar Eats
5-10 p.m. tonight, Nomar Plaza, 204 E. 21st St.
Festive ICT, the people responsible for the Wichita Taco Fest, is one of the organizers of a new event called Nomar Eatz, which will happen from 5 to 10 p.m. tonight at Nomar Plaza, 21st and Broadway. The event will include food, drinks and desserts from a long list of Hispanic-owned businesses, including Tacos Pina, El Gusto Mexican Eatery, Rockin Rico’s, Las Delicias ICT and more. The event also will include folklorico dancers and a pinata. Admission is free.
CSB Block Party
Noon-11:45 p.m. Saturday, Central Standard Brewing, 156 S. Greenwood
Central Standard Brewing is turning nine and is celebrating with its annual block party, which will happen from noon to 11:45 p.m. on Saturday. The event, which will take place on the closed-off street in front of the brewery, will feature special beer releases and live music all day. Admission is free.
Asian Food Fair
Saturday and Sunday, Lao Buddhist Temple, 2550 S. Greenwich
Lao Buddhist Associates of Kansas is putting on a festival this weekend called Boun Pravet that will include cultural activities, a parade and vendors selling clothing, gifts and food. It continues from noon to 11 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is free.
Thirst & Broadway
5 p.m. Wednesday, The Orpheum, 200 N. Broadway
This event, which doesn’t happen until Wednesday, is an “elevated happy hour” that includes a behind-the-scenes tour of the theater and live entertainment from Craig Owens and the Bodo Ensemble, Regina Klenjoski Dance Company and Michael Kline Imagery. Ticket holders will have access to a cash bar and complimentary hors d’oeuvres. Concessions and merchandise also will be for sale. The event is at 5 p.m. Wednesday, and doors open at 4:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 at wichitaorpheum.com
