A new restaurant/bar has just opened in the former Lotus Leaf space in Old Town
He’s been quietly practicing for a few weeks, but now, R.C. Campbell says he’s ready to open his new Old Town bar and restaurant — R&R Public House.
But you can’t visit until Thursday: The business is closed on Wednesdays and Sundays.
Campbell, a Salina native who picked up his pub knowledge while living and working in Seattle, has taken over the space at 251 N. Washington that Lotus Leaf Cafe vacated in October. He remodeled the bright interior to give it more of a pub feel and is now offering a food menu that features things like wings, burgers, pizza, sandwiches and salads. He also serves pub-style bangers and mash and will be adding a shepherd’s pie soon.
He’s also serving a menu of craft cocktails, and starting on Friday, he’ll be ready to serve beer.
In an attempt to let people know he’s open, Campbell said, he’s been handing out fliers around Old Town advertising a special: For a limited time, he’s serving $7 BLTs and $8 club sandwiches.
“It’s a slow start,” he said. “Getting ourselves out there is going to be the key, so a lot of social media and a lot of word of mouth...”
The hours for the business are 11:30 to 9 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays and 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.
Campbell said his inspiration for the bar came from an establishment in Seattle called Gantry Public House. Campbell, a longtime bartender, said that he helped with the opening of that business, which operates near the stadium where the Seattle Seahawks play.
In July, he plans to offer bartending classes at his Wichita business. Those interested can sign up for more information at www.rrpublichouse.com/classes. He also plans to start serving brunch in July.
