Owners of longtime Wichita fried chicken restaurant are new tenants in Da Cajun Shak spot

The area near 21st and Woodlawn wasn’t Cajun-free for very long.

A little less than a month after Da Cajun Shak owner Patty Granger closed her restaurant of 19 years at 6249 E. 21st St., another restaurant has moved in — and it offers Cajun fare, too.

Today is opening day for LA-Cajun Seafood & Chicken, owned by Sadia Jamen and Risul Hossain. The couple also own Louisiana Famous Fried Chicken, which has operated at 4206 E. Harry since 2017. They bought it in 2022.

LA-Cajun Seafood & Chicken offers a menu (posted below) that shares many similarities with the one at Louisiana Famous Fried Chicken, including fried chicken, fish and shrimp as well as tacos, po’boys and gumbo. But LA-Cajun Seafood & Chicken also offers a few other Cajun-themed items like etouffee, Cajun Poutine, gator balls, crawfish and bread pudding. It also will serve seafood boils on the weekends.

Jamen said that the new restaurant also offers halal options so that Islamic people in Wichita can come in and try something new. She said most halal-friendly restaurants in town are Middle Eastern or Pakistani. But at the new restaurant, people who eat halal also can get fried chicken, gumbo and more.

“We love food,” she said. “Why don’t we do other foods as halal?

The new restaurant’s hours for now are 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. daily. Eventually, Jamen said, the owners will choose one day to close, but which one depends on customer demand.

Today’s grand opening activities include a 2 p.m. ribbon cutting and a 5 p.m. cake cutting
