A colorful and sweet new business is about to open on the west side of Wichita.

Sugar Llamas is a mini-doughnut business at 841 N. Tyler that also will serve ice cream and a full line of coffee drinks. It’ll also have a drive-through.

It’s scheduled to open sometime in July, perhaps as early as July 10, owner Kim Mallon said.

The shop will be Mallon’s first foray into the food business. She also co-owns Elite Properties of Wichita, a property rental business.

She said that her son and daughter-in-law, who live in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, took her to a Sugar Llamas store while she was visiting, and she loved the doughnuts — which are sold in packs of six, 12, 25, 36 and 100.

“It was kind of like a ‘wow’ moment, and I thought, ‘Oh my gosh, these are amazing,’” she said. “When I tried them, immediately I was hooked.”

She said her daughter suggested she open a store in Wichita, and after she and her husband ran the numbers, they decided it would work. They found the space on the south end of a strip center near Central and Tyler. It sits next to the Allpak Battery store, and its previous tenant, Shape’n It Up Nutrition, is moving a few doors down.

The Sugar Llamas chain was founded by Dallas and Robyn Jones, who founded the self-serve frozen yogurt chain CherryBerry in 2010. (Wichita had a CherryBerry at 737 N. Maize Road from 2011 until it closed in 2015.)

The couple sold the company, which had expanded to five countries and 28 states, saying they planned to retire. But in 2021, they opened their first Sugar Llamas in Tulsa. They now have six stores operating in Oklahoma and several more coming in Arkansas, Texas, Nebraska, and Arizona.

Sugar Llamas’ mini-doughnuts come coated in cinnamon sugar, powdered sugar or cocoa powdered sugar and are topped with “drizzles” in flavors like peanut butter, coconut, cotton candy, lemon, banana and more. The shop has several of its own creations, and Mallon said one of her favorites is the Chocolate Chip Pancake doughnut, which is coated in powdered sugar and topped with maple drizzle and chocolate chips.

The shop’s hard ice cream comes in several flavors and can be made into an affogato, which is a drink that features a scoop of ice cream topped with a shot of espresso. The coffee menu has all the regular espresso drinks plus frappes and Red Bull drinks. See the full menu at sugarllamas.com/menu

The shop — which will get its signage installed soon — will have seating inside for about 20 as well as window bench seating. It’ll also have outdoor picnic benches covered with umbrellas. Customers will be able to order from Sugar Llamas via DoorDash.

Once open, the shop’s hours will be 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.
