Third time is not a charm for Wichita chef on ‘Guy’s Grocery Games.’ What happened?

At this point, Wichita chef Natasha Gandhi Rue could almost be considered a regular cast member on the Food Network show “Guy’s Grocery Games.”

On Wednesday night, Gandhi-Rue — owner of The Kitchen at 725 E. Douglas — made her third appearance on the show, competing in an episode called “GGG: Mother of All Winners.” She was one of four contestants who were chefs but also moms and had appeared on the show before and won.

Gandhi-Rue was a contestant in November 2021 and placed second in a Thanksgiving-themed episode. But she won on her initial outing, which aired during the pandemic in April 2020.

This time, though, she lost, said Gandhi-Rue, who flew to the San Francisco area to film the show in the fall. And she even went in with a plan, which was to have no plan.

“This time, I didn’t want to be in my head and just kind of enjoy it,” she said.

But it didn’t work out. She didn’t play the game right, she said, and she tried to make everything from scratch rather than relying on some convenience items, which is the key to winning.

“That was my fault,” she said.. “But I’m okay with that. It was a huge learning experience.”

Gandhi-Rue said she loves appearing on the show and would absolutely go back if asked.

“I enjoy doing it,” she said. “I don’t think a whole lot of other people are willing to say, ‘I’ll go on a show and do a whole lot of crazy things and make a fool of myself.’”

If you missed the original airing, you still have a chance to catch it. The show will air again at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 21, on Food Network.
