A new restaurant in Wichita’s Old Town Square celebrates its grand opening on Wednesday
Old Town Square has a new dining option that will please fans of Japanese and Korean fare.
Sushiya, a new restaurant that has taken over the Hana Cafe space at 325 N. Mead, quietly started a “soft opening” on Thursday of last week, and on Wednesday of this week, it will celebrate its grand opening.
Those who visit on Wednesday, when the hours will be 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., could win gift cards or other giveaway items, and the restaurant will be offering drink specials.
As The Eagle first announced in early February, owners of Wasabi East at 3242 N. Rock Road, bought Hana Cafe from longtime owner Eunice Kim, who decided to retire and return to her native Korea. She first opened Hana Cafe in late 1996 and ran it for 27 years. Its last day was Feb. 25.
On Tuesday morning, I popped into the restaurant to find Eunice Kim standing at the host stand. She explained that she agreed to work at the restaurant for a couple of weeks to help new owners Jiyeon Kim and her husband, Sean, with the transition.
She guided me through the new menu, which features a long list of sushi rolls, sushi, sashimi, sushi burritos, bento boxes and appetizers. The new owners kept several of the Korean items Eunice Kim had on the Hana Cafe menu, including yakisoba and bibimbap. You can peruse the full menu below.
The new owners also remodeled the restaurant and opened up the space, removing the wall that greeted customers when they first walked in as well as another big wall that blocked the bar space from the main dining room.
The hours for the new restaurant will be 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Fridays, noon to 9:30 pm. Saturdays, and 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sundays. For the first few weeks the restaurant is open, it will close between 3 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays to give the staff a break.
Sushiya, the new owners say, means “home of sushi.” The new owners are not related to Eunice Kim nor is their Wasabi on the east side of town related to the Wasabi at 912 E. Douglas in downtown or to the one at 2404 N. Maize Road on the west side.
