A Wichita chicken restaurant that closed after its owner’s death has just reopened

The Wichita Eagle

The last several years have been a roller coaster for fans of Da Chicken Shak — an enterprise started in 2018 by the late Tim Granger of the long-running Da Cajun Shak & More restaurant at 21st and Woodlawn.

Granger — who would eventually open four locations of the chicken tender restaurant — died unexpectedly two years ago. Since then, three of his four Da Chicken Shak restaurants have closed, leaving only the original at 2428 W. 13th St. still operating.

But last week, one of them reopened.

In January, a new owner purchased the name and recipes for Da Chicken Shak & More and has just reopened the restaurant at 1112 W. 31st St. South that closed last December.

The owner’s agreement with the Granger family allows them to keep and continue running the restaurant on 13th Street. The new owner has the rights to open more Da Chicken Shak restaurants in the future.

The 31st Street restaurant, which originally opened in January 2019, has mostly the same menu as the original, but the new owner has cut out items that weren’t selling well, like frog legs, oysters and crawfish. The menu still includes fried chicken tenders, catfish strips, cole slaw, mac and cheese, hush puppies, chicken gizzards and livers, pie and cobbler.

Its hours are 11 a.m.-3 p.m. and 5 -8 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. It’s closed on Sundays.

The now-closed Da Chicken Shak restaurants were at 3920 E. Harry, which opened in May 2020 but closed the following year, making way for the first location of Mr. Miyagi, and at Kellogg and Greenwich, which closed in December of last year and is the future home of a Korean corn dog spot called Mochinut.
