A big fiesta, street party with Hispanic food, drink, music happens Saturday in Wichita
Wichita’s North End will be the site this weekend of a big fiesta — a street party that will feature Hispanic food, art, vendors and live music.
Vamos Nomar Fiesta is an event by Empower, a nonprofit whose mission is to improve and promote Wichita’s North End neighborhood and its businesses. The event, which is scheduled for 4 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, will happen in Normar Plaza, 204 E. 21st St. North, and will spill out onto 21st Street, which will be closed to traffic from Broadway to Market.
Those who attend can order food from a long list of local vendors, including Argentina’s Empanadas as well as food trucks like Tacos El Compadre, Tacos El Chaparro, La Chonchis, Tacos Bravo, Brazita Bites and Churros El Carnaval. A vendor that sells michelada mixes will be there, too, as will Sally’s Sweet Treats. Adult beverages also will be for sale.
Live music will start at 4 p.m. with the Josue Estrada Band followed by DJ Easy at 5:30 p.m., Mariachi Los Reyes at 6:45 p.m., DJ Easy again at 7:45 p.m. and La Apertura Nortena at 8:30 p.m.
Ariel Rodriguez, the executive director of Empower, said that the fiesta — which is free to attend — is intended as a community-wide celebration that will mark the conclusion of Hispanic Heritage Month, which started Sept. 15 and officially ends on Saturday.
He said the group hopes to turn the fiesta into an annual event.
“We want to highlight businesses that people may not often be exposed to or know about and highlight the diversity of our Hispanic businesses,” he said.
