Two more Sbarro counters have been added in Wichita, and another will open within 2 weeks
For those keeping track, a couple of more Sbarro pizza locations have opened in area Kwik Shop stores of late, and yet another will open in a couple of weeks.
You might recall that Sbarro, the pizza chain that was a mall food court staple in the 1980s, made its big return to Wichita in late June when the first of several planned Sbarro’s kiosks opened inside the Kwik Shop at 514 S. Oliver, which is just south of Kellogg.
Now, two more have been added: The Kwik Shop at 4811 S. Seneca also got its Sbarro counter over the summer, and the one at 4802 E. 21st St. — which is near Wichita State University, at 21st and Oliver — just opened its kiosk about three weeks ago.
Next up is the Kwik Shop at 3750 N. Maize Road. A Sbarro spokeswoman said its Sbarro counter will open in the next two weeks.
Valley Center and Haysville are also scheduled to get kiosks this year, she said.
The new Sbarro kiosks offer pizza by the slice or whole made with cheese, pepperoni or specialty toppings. Customers also can get wings, stromboli and chocolate chip cookies.
Sbarro, based in New York, gained popularity in shopping malls and airports in the 1980s but faced bankruptcy in 2011 and again in 2014. Wichita’s last Sbarro in Towne East closed around that time. Today, the chain has around 600 locations in 24 countries. It’s now focusing its expansion on convenience stores and travel plazas.
Sbarro first entered the Wichita market in 1983, opening a location inside Towne East Square. The Towne West Square Sbarro followed in 1985.
