A new restaurant has just opened in the former home of The Chalet, and it offers a few things Wichita is not too familiar with.

Mi Ya Izakaya, a project by Alex Kim and his father Yul Kim — who previously ran a restaurant in Alaska — opened on Monday at 3030 N. Penstemon, which is near 29th and Rock. I first told you about the restaurant back in April.

It’s a Japanese/Korean restaurant that offers not only a big sushi bar with rolls and sashimi, but also Korean-style fried chicken, which uses a frying technique that renders it extra crispy. The chicken comes in several different flavors.

Izakaya is the Japanese word that describes a casual pub offering snack items, and Miya Izakaya has those, too. Among its options are cheese nachos, steak skewers and more. It also serves both Japanese and Korean appetizers.

Another unique offering at the new restaurant: It has small tablets mounted at each table that allow people to order food electronically and also to charge their phones.

The owners took their time remodeling the building, which now has dim lighting, modern decor and partially enclosed booths. The restaurant also will offer a full bar once its liquor license is secure.

The restaurant’s hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 5 to 11 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. It’s closed on Sundays.
