Ziggy’s Pizza is expanding again, and this time the beneficiaries will be those who live in and near the Auburn Hills neighborhood.

Jamie Verbeckmoes, who opened the first Ziggy’s in Clifton Square with his brother, Ryan, a decade ago, says that they’re planning a new restaurant at 135th and Maple. They’re taking over a space on the end cap of a strip center attached to KANZA bank, which is on the southwest corner of the intersection.

“We really like the neighborhood,” he said. “We are always looking for different pockets of Wichita that we like, and this has always been one of them.”

But because the space was previously occupied by a liquor store and has never been a restaurant before, the transformation is likely to take some time, Jamie said. At this point, he’s not willing to even guess on a timeline.

“We are waiting on some plan reviews and fun things like that, so it’s going to take awhile,” he said.

The new Ziggy’s will be the local chain’s fourth: In addition to the original, which opened in 2012, Ziggy’s restaurants also operate at 12115 E. 21st St. and at 8404 W. 13th St.

The new Ziggy’s, when open, will be run by brother Jason Verbeckmoes, who is now serving as the general manager at the restaurant at 13th and Tyler.

Ten years ago, Jamie and Ryan Verbeckmoes were two young guys in their 20s who wanted to start a pizza place offering the type of rectangular pizzas their mom made when they were kids.

The concept has been a hit, and Jamie said the three existing restaurants are always busy.

“We’re excited to keep expanding our footprint,” he said. “The main reason we’re able to continue to expand is that we have a lot of great people in management and on our staff that are ready for more responsibility, and a lot of us are family or close friends who have all grown up together.”

Stay tuned for more details on the new Ziggy’s.
