This longtime Wichita bakery announced its closure in June. But it’s gotten a reprieve.
A Wichita bakery owner whose announced last month that she was closing her Normandie Center shop is getting a reprieve.
Marilyn Ramsey, the owner of River City Sweet Shop at 6476 E. Central, is still planning to close her 12-year-old shop on July 30 and go ahead with an Aug. 9 auction.
But instead of liquidating everything, now she’ll just be downsizing. Ramsey has just agreed to open a smaller version of her bakery in the Towne East Square food court, where she’ll fulfill corporate orders and sell to mall shoppers single items like cupcakes, brownie bits, cookies, muffins, cake balls and more.
Ramsey is taking over the spot on the mall’s lower level where Simply Sangria has operated since January. Owner Brian Miller said that today — Wednesday — will be has last day at the mall, though he’ll still keep running his original shop at 243 N. Cleveland. He’s planning to move ahead with his previously announced expansion plans there, too, and will soon be adding food, including the Donna Italia pizzas he’s been serving at the mall.
Miller said that because of recent health issues, he’s just not able to run both locations anymore.
Ramsey said she has the month of August to make her transition but hopes to have the shop ready in the mall before the end of that month. She’ll also be using the little nook next door for birthday parties, cookie decorating and seating for her customers.
“I just couldn’t say goodbye just yet,” she said. “I have had so many clients and regulars beg me to stay open. I just couldn’t let them down — or myself.”
