Two new sporty entertainment businesses will open in Wichita in the coming days
Two new entertainment venues will open in Wichita this week: one an east-side sim racing business, the other an Old Town ax-throwing place. Here’s what to know about both openings:
Glas Haus Racing
Prost co-owner Austin English and partner Tevin Manuel are ready to open their sim racing facility at 7817 E. 37th St. North on Friday. Their business has taken over the former Molino’s space near 37th and Woodlawn and will include eight high-end simulators that will offer everyday drivers an opportunity to try out some of the top race tracks around the world.
The simulators, which are made by Sparco, feature a race car seat and a steering wheel on a 400-pound frame. When racers climb in, they’re facing three computer screens that give them the feeling they’re in a race car. They wear headphones, which relay all the engine and track sounds an actual driver would hear, and the seat vibrates to recreate the feel of skidding off the road or driving over a bump.
Glas Haus also will feature a bar selling bottled or canned beers and twisted teas, and the owners have partnered with Brazita Bites food truck, which will serve Brazilian coxinhas and more inside the business starting in early August. Brazita Bites owners Rodrigo and Jessica Ciriaco will have the truck set up in the parking lot and serving on opening day. No outside food or drink will be allowed inside.
English, a racing and car enthusiast in his free time, said Manuel approached him with the idea for the business, and English was immediately interested. He’d tried out a racing simulator a decade ago and loved it so much, he had a hard time stepping away from it.
Hours for Glas Haus will be 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays. No reservations are needed. For more information, visit www.facebook.com/glashausracing
Kiss My Axe Throwing
A new ax-throwing business will open on Friday in the former Funky Monkeys Shaved Ice 21+ spot at 216 N. Washington.
Owners Vanessa and Treg Fletcher along with partner Curtis Smith say Kiss My Axe Throwing will be different from Wichita’s existing ax-throwing businesses — Blade & Timber and Axe to Grind — in that it will have a Las Vegas theme with lots of black lights and neon signage. It’ll also have a large grass wall, two 36-foot bars and pub-style tables just off 10 throwing lanes.
Fletcher said she and her husband were looking for a fun activity for their employees at H M Diesel Repair at Christmastime and came across Axe to Grind at 220 S. Commerce. They had a great time and even offered to buy that business but were told it was not for sale, so they decided to open their own.
Kiss My Axe will have a full bar and offer munchies but it won’t serve food.
The business will open at 5 p.m. on Friday. After that, its hours will be 2 to 10 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays; 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays; 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturdays; and noon to 8 p.m. Sundays.
Walk-ins are welcome on Friday. By week’s end, scheduling information will be available at www.kissmyaxethrowing.com
