A new coffee business offering drinks with a Mexican twist is putting on a weekend pop-up

If standard-issue lattes and espresso drinks are getting a bit repetitive, this weekend you can try out the creations of a coffee entrepreneur in Wichita who has something different to offer.

Oscar Pineda, a local roaster with a passion for connecting people through coffee, has started offering pop ups where he sells coffee drinks with a Hispanic flair. His next one will be from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday morning at the NoMar International Market, 204 E. 21st St. North.

Pineda is the owner of a year-old e-commerce roasting business called Esperanza Coffee Roasters, where he sells his fresh-roasted beans by the pound.

He’s also an active supporter of Wichita’s North End and its initiatives to grow and improve the neighborhood. Back in May, he put on a coffee pop up as part of the Open Streets ICT event that took place in the NoMar area.

It went well, Pineda said, and now, he plans to start offering more pop ups. (He’s not quite ready to commit to opening a coffee shop yet: He wants to first see how people respond to his products at pop-up events.)

His specialties are two Hispanic coffee drinks that he puts his own twist on, he said. His most popular drink is a horchata latte, based on the popular sweet rice and cinnamon drink popular in Mexico. He also offers his own version of cafe de olla, a traditional Mexican spiced coffee.

During his pop-up event, Pineda — who also works as a roaster at Reverie Coffee Roasters — will also sell hibiscus lemonade and a Mexican peanut butter candy known as mazapan. He’ll have bags of his fresh-roasted coffee beans for sale as well.

Pineda, who will be able to accept cash or card on Saturday, said he plans to put on more pop ups in the future, and he’ll announce them on his Facebook page: facebook.com/esperanzacoffeeroasters

Coffee beans also are available for sale at www.esperanzacoffeeroasters.com
