A second Wichita Wendy’s restaurant meets the wrecking ball, and it won’t be the last

Wendy’s fans in Wichita were alarmed recently to see the longtime restaurant at 3601 E. Harry had met the wrecking ball.

But the site won’t be rubble for long.

Just like it’s doing on Rock Road, Wichita’s Wendy’s franchisee Cotti Foods is planning to rebuild a newer, slicker restaurant on the site of the old one. And it will follow with the demolition and rebuilding of a third Wichita Wendy’s: the one at 601 N. West Street.

Here’s a rundown of what’s happening at each of the three Wichita Wendy’s sites getting the tear-down-and-rebuild treatment. The following addresses are the only ones scheduled for now.

3601 E. Harry — Rubble for now: The Wendy’s restaurant near Harry and Hillside, which has been in operation since the 1980s, was demolished a couple of weeks ago, but construction has already started on a new restaurant on the site. It should be ready to reopen by the end of July, said Emily O’Neill, the marketing coordinator for Cotti Foods.

601 N. West St. — Demolition scheduled: The Wendy’s at the front of the Plaza West shopping center near Central and West will be demolished sometime in July. O’Neill said. It also will be rebuilt and should be ready to reopen in December. The corner will be busy with construction this year as Church’s Chicken franchisee Mike Jizzini is also planning to erect a new restaurant right next door to the Wendy’s site.

160 S. Rock Road — Opening soon: Motorists on Rock Road have been watching the progress on the site of Wichita’s first-ever Wendy’s, which originally opened in 1975 but was torn down late last year. The rebuild is almost complete, though, and Wendy’s is aiming for an early April reopening, O’Neill said.
