Here’s what you can find to eat, drink at The Truck Stop food truck park
It’s opening day for Wichita’s newest food truck park, and it’s going to be a good one for dining outdoors. (March 1 high in the mid 70s, anyone?)
The Truck Stop Food Truck Park is a new venture by Willie Finley, who also has his own food truck called Willie’s Wings. He’s leased a large vacant parking lot at 6315 E. Kellogg from the owner of the adjacent motel, Starlite Motor Lodge, and he’s planning to have local food trucks park there seven days a week.
So far, he’s signed up five trucks, and four of them are set up for opening day. Visitors who go on Tuesday will find Bongo Fruit Smoothies, a popular local truck that serves eye-catching tropical drinks in hollowed-out pineapples; Face Stuffers Food Wagon, which offers burgers and more: and Don Nacho’s Catering & Food Trailer, serving tacos, tortas, and other Mexican fare.
They can also get food from Finley’s truck, which serves chicken wings in 13 different flavors. Willie’s Wings will be a permanent fixture at the park.
Finley’s other tenant, Busy B’s, will join the lineup for the weekend starting on Friday. It serves things like hot dogs, mac and cheese, fries, empanadas and more.
There’s room for customers to park in the lot to pick up their food.
Finley said he anticipates adding four new trucks next week and has space for up to 18. He is asking truckers to be at the park from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week, and his tenants can sign contracts committing to weekends only, Mondays through Fridays only, or seven days a week.
He’s letting trucks that are licensed with the city park free for the month of March after they put down a deposit.
Finley has said his goal is to create a place where Wichitans know they can always find food truck fare, which has been difficult since the August 2020 closing of the ICT Pop-Up Urban Park at 121 E. Douglas.
He also wants to provide fledgling food truckers a place to build their followings.
The park’s hours through March will be 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily but will likely extend into the evening as the weather continues to warm up.
