This popular Mexican snack and dessert shop outgrew its space in a year, is on the move
A Mexican snack shop that started as a mobile fruit stand on Wichita’s north end is about to make its second move in less than a year.
Las Delicias ICT, which last March upgraded from its stand at 21st and Waco to a brick-and-mortar shop at 359 W. 21st St., has been closed since the middle of December, and some fans feared it was out of business.
But the owners were just preparing the business for another big move, one that will land it in a strip center where two other popular Mexican food businesses are already operating.
By late February or mid March at the latest, Las Delicias ICT owner Soccoro Garcia will be reopening in the spot at 1052 N. Waco that Senor Munchies vacated when it closed over the summer. The space is in Juarez Plaza, which also holds Molino’s Mexican Cuisine and Juarez Bakery.
The new space will allow Garcia to have much more room for seating, said her son, Santi Castillo.
“It’s triple the size, so it’s a big move for us,” Castillo said.
She’ll serve the same things she was known for in the old location: fruit waters, elote served on the cob or in a cup, Mexican ice cream, Mexican chips with toppings, and ceviche and aguachiles on the weekends. Garcia will also continue to serve the dramatic cups of fresh fruit with toppings that first earned her customers.
The goal for the first year of business in the new spot, Castillo said, is to add a kitchen to the space and begin serving a small menu of Mexican food favorites like tacos and tortas.
Garcia first started her business as a fruit stand around 2014, eventually upgrading to a bright yellow food truck that operated at the corner of 21st and Waco.
Last spring, a spot in the strip center where the truck was parked opened up, and she opened her first store front there.
She’d signed only a year lease, her son said, and had outgrown the space almost immediately. They were lucky to find the spot at Juarez Plaza, he said.
When it reopens, Las Delicias ICT will have the same hours as it did in its old location: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily except Tuesdays, when it’s closed.
I’ll let you know when the new Las Delicias ICT has an opening date.
