Rumors of this restaurant’s demise have been greatly exaggerated by Facebook translator
If you take the Facebook post at face value, you might believe that El Papa Pollo — the Mexican restaurant at 808 W. 25th St. that specializes in grilled chickens — is about to leave Wichita.
But that’s not the case, and the misunderstanding may be the fault of Facebook’s translation service.
Owners of the restaurant, which has operated at 808 W. 25th Street since 2018, announced earlier this month via Facebook that “this month of January will be our last month In this town I thank everyone for their support.” At least, that’s the English translation Facebook provided of the original post, which read: “Este mes de enero será nuestro último mes En esta localidad agradezco a todos por su soporte.”
“Localidad” can translate to “town” in English, but in this case, the owners were referring only to the restaurant’s location.
Though it’s true that El Papa Pollo is preparing to leave its spot at 808 W. 25th Street, which “wasn’t the best location for us,” the owners say they’re looking for a new building in Wichita.
In the meantime, they’ll continue operating out of their food truck, which they opened two months ago and permanently parked on the southwest corner of 13th and Oliver, in the parking lot of Wash World laundry. The truck, called Papa Pollo Taqueria, is open daily for lunch and dinner and serves things like street tacos, guacamole burgers, chicken tenders and wings.
In addition to chicken, it offers carne asada (steak), carnitas (pork) and ground beef. Burritos, chile rellenos, flautas and more are also on the menu, and one of its specialties is a taco basket that features 10 soft tacos with choice of chicken, carnitas or ground beef for $9.99.
The truck takes cash only.
El Papa Pollo originally opened almost eight years ago at 901 E. Harry and was previously known as El Papa Gallo. I’ll keep you posted on the restaurant’s search for a new building.
