Doma owners have plans for the former Joe Kelly’s Oyster Dock space next door, too

As construction progresses on Doma, the new restaurant set to open on Jan. 15 in the former Carlos O’Kelly’s building outside of Towne East Square, people are also starting to notice activity at the restaurant space next door.

That building, whose address is 7607 E. Douglas, has been home to the straightforwardly named Super Buffet restaurant since 2006. (It was also the longtime home to Joe Kelly’s Oyster Dock, which operated there from 1983 until 2004.)

The Super Buffet restaurant — an Asian restaurant that offered sushi, a Mongolian grill and Chinese dishes — closed at the start of the pandemic. But soon, its former space could get new life.

The building is owned by Max Cole, who also owns Doma and the Doma building. At the moment, the building — which is still filled with the buffet line and dramatic chandelier left behind by Super Buffet’s owners, is being used to store items headed for Doma, like patio furniture. Workers can frequently be seen moving things in and out of the space.

Doma’s crew also has plans for the former Super Buffet restaurant next door. They are Operating Partner Stephen Dean, left; Executive Chef Joseph Castillo; and General Manager manager Tom Williamson.

But Cole and his team, which includes operating partner Stephen Dean, Executive Chef Joseph Castillo and General Manager manager Tom Williamson, have big plans for that space, too, and are looking at separating it into three different areas that could hold three different concepts, all food-and-drink related.

Though they’re still investigating and contemplating, they said, they hope to turn their attention to the Super Buffet restaurant as soon as Doma is up and running.

“We have plans that we’re currently exploring,” Castillo said. “We hope to get something started in the next year.”
