Wichita business that started as food truck will soon have 3 brick-and-mortar restaurants
It started three years ago as a food truck.
Now, Road Runner Mexican Fast Food is a growing local Mexican food chain with one brick-and-mortar restaurant — and at least two more on the way.
Its owner is Alicia Montante, who started serving her specialties from a food truck parked at 2427 W. 53rd St. North. In March, she added a brick-and-mortar store at 5255 N. Maize Road in Maize.
That’s been going well, said Montante’s nephew and employee, Luis Moreno, and soon, she’ll be adding two more stationary restaurants.
The first is taking over the spot at 2420 S. Oliver that most recently was occupied by Walt’s Klassics, which closed earlier this year. Moreno said that the Pawnee and Oliver restaurant should open within a month. It will have the same menu as the restaurant on Maize Road and also will have a drive-through and room for seating inside. In fact, the new restaurant will have more seating than the Maize Road location, Moreno said.
Montante also is planning a restaurant for Derby, Moreno said, and although she’s secured a location, she isn’t ready to share it just yet. Though the Derby location is “in the works,” Moreno said, there’s no timeline as to when it will open.
The food truck also still operates from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. weekdays and from 8 a.m. to 1 a.m. on weekends. The Maize Road restaurant is open from 5 a.m. to 2 a.m. daily.
Though the sign for the restaurant at Pawnee and Oliver reads “24 hours,” Montante hasn’t settled on hours just yet, Moreno said.
Road Runner offers a big menu of burritos, tacos, quesadillas and breakfast items, including breakfast burritos and breakfast platter.
