New-to-Wichita couple couldn’t find a taco they liked, so they’re opening their own place
When Anna Morales and her husband, Omar Ortiz, recently relocated to Wichita to be near his family, they couldn’t find a taco they liked.
So the couple, who ran a crepe and coffee business for five years in Phoenix, decided they’d open their own restaurant.
Their specialty, according to their Dia de Los Muertos-themed sign: “Tacos to die for.”
On Friday, the couple will open a new restaurant called La Catrina. (No relation to Las Catrinas on Maize Road) in the little building at 3090 W. 13th St. that most recently was home to Marina’s Mexican Seafood. The space also briefly was home to one incarnation of Sorrel’s Jamaican Food.
Morales said that the restaurant will focus on tacos made with carne asada and pastor, and it will also serve tacos de cabeza, which are made from the soft head meat of a cow. Another specialty will be “quesabirrias” — which are quesadillas filled with beef birria meat and served with a side of consomme.
On the weekends, La Catrina will serve soups like menudo and pozole. Eventually, Morales said, the couple may also add crepes to the menu.
Morales said that she and Ortiz have completely remodeled the interior of the small space and moved things around to make more room for seating. They now can fit about 18 people inside, and in nice weather, there’s also a patio customers can use.
Its hours will be 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesdays though Fridays and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. The restaurant will be closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
