National magazine names the best food truck in Kansas, and it’s a Wichita original

Redbook Magazine went there. It declared one Kansas food truck the best in the state.

On Tuesday, the magazine posted a story on its website with the headline “The Best Food Truck In Every State.” The author appears to have somehow analyzed Yelp reviews to make his state-by-state selections.

The winner in Kansas: The Flying Stove — Wichita’s earliest entry in the modern food truck movement, which was opened by brothers Jeff and Rob Schauf in 2011. Nine years later, that truck is still rolling and still popular.

Well, you don't say....Maybe you're overdue for a visit. Check this week's schedule here...

It regularly sets up at places like Natural Grocers West, at the corner of Main and English downtown, and at different ABC Liquor Stores around Wichita, where it sells the gourmet sandwiches, tacos and the truffle fries it’s become known for.

The Redbook story is essentially a slideshow featuring a photo from each state as well as a Yelp user review. For Kansas, the photo is a closeup of a fully stuffed sandwich, and the comment by Yelp user Brandon E. says, “I can’t express my love for this place enough! I had a cheesy beef pocket and my taste buds are still in relapse after the experience.”

That’s a good thing, I think.

It’s fun to see the hometown guy get a national shout out, but there’s another reason (or 49) to check out the story.

The photos from the other states’ best food trucks also are mouthwatering and might offer solid ideas for any aspiring food trucker in Wichita.

I, for example, could go for Kentucky’s SnowWhat Snowball’s butterbeer snow cone, New York’s Frenchy’s Finest’s beignets and croissants, or the lobster-stuffed sandwich from The Happy Lobster in Chicago. (Hey, if they can get fresh lobster, why can’t we? On second thought, don’t answer that.)

Congrats to the guys at The Flying Stove.
