Owners of slider restaurant that had been planned for Delano have found a different spot

The slider restaurant that was supposed to open on West Douglas in Delano isn’t happening there after all.

But it is still happening.

Slider Shak, which was slated to go in the old Coney Island Hot Weiners building at the corner of Douglas and Walnut before owners had a change of heart, now has a new location, and it should be open by the end of the month.

It’s going into the former Sweet Willie’s BBQ spot at 4628 S. Seneca, said Michelle McMillan, the restaurant’s manager.

It will serve the same menu that owners were planning when they thought they were opening in Delano — mini burgers that are filled not only with beef but also come with meatloaf, pulled pork and meatballs as fillings. There will even be a taco burger slider and a French dip slider.

The restaurant will also serve chili, salads, potato salad, baked beans, mac and cheese, and homemade potato chips.

McMillan, a former employee of both TJ’s Burger House and the new Town & Country Classic, said she’s been hearing from people in the neighborhood that they’ll welcome the new restaurant.

“I’ve been talking to a lot of people who live in that area and work in that area who are really starting to complain about their choices down there,” she said.

The owners announced in May their plans for the restaurant, but after a couple of months, they pulled out of their lease on Douglas, and the spot is back up for rent.

In August, the partners said that they were not ready to open a new business amid the uncertainty that accompanied the COVID-19 pandemic.

The new space is better for the owners, McMillan said, because it has a drive through in addition to room for a few seats inside.

If COVID worsens in the fall and winter and restaurants have to close their dining rooms again, she said, the owners will still be able to operate.

“At least if you have a drive through you can still serve,” she said. “This is a smarter idea for us because of COVID.”

I’ll keep you posted about the restaurant’s opening plans.
