Bierocks — specifically bierocks made in Wichita — in the national spotlight this week
Bierocks are a way of life in Wichita.
But every now and then, there’s a reminder that people outside of our region aren’t so familiar with the little meat pies Kansans love so much.
This week, USA Today published a story reported from Wichita with the headline “Bierock is one delicious sandwich you’ve probably never heard of.”
The article, published online Wednesday as part of the paper’s 10 Best series, traces the bierock’s origins and features interviews and photos from two of Wichita’s most well-known bierock makers: German restaurant Prost inside Revolutsia at 2721 E. Central and M&M Bierock at 2065 E. Central.
The author of the article described bierocks as such:
“Bierocks are delicious and, as meat pockets go, super cute too – something like a miniature manatee you can eat (relatively) guilt-free.”
The article discusses the daily batch of bierocks that Manu English, a native of Germany who never made bieorcks before she moved to Kansas, cooks up daily at Prost.
The author also stopped by the famous drive-through stand, M&M, where he talked to owner Mary Morain.
“It’s just an awesome food,” she told the writer. “They’re so easy. You can eat it on the go, you can freeze them wonderful. You can do anything with the bierock.”
I’ve written many times over the years about the love Wichitans have for bierocks, and there are several places to get them in town.
In addition to the two mentioned in the USA Today article, Wichitans can also find bierocks at places like Want Beirock, a combination coffee shop and bierock bakery at 2615 W. 13th St.
Several other Wichita restaurants have them on their menu, including Bagatelle at 6801 E. Harry; College Hill Deli, 3407 E. Douglas; M.I.F. Deli, 5618 E. Central; Delano’s Diner, 1220 W. Douglas; and Java Villa Cafe, 7812 E. Harry.
And still others offer them as occasional specials, including Doo-Dah Diner, 206 E. Kellogg, and The Pumphouse, 825 E. Second.
