Dining With Denise Neil

Dreamy Wichita-area dining destination is featured in an 8-page national magazine spread

In a normal year, the dreamy Elderslie Farm — a haven for blackberries, homemade goat cheese and high-end farm-to-table dinners — is about to open its outdoor cafe for the season.

But as everyone knows, this is not a normal year, and the eatery owned by George and Katharine Elder has been sustaining itself on family meals and cheese trays to-go.

If you’re missing the springtime beauty of the farm, which is at 3501 E. 101st. St. North in Kechi, there’s a little relief. The latest issue of Midwest Living magazine, a national magazine with a Midwest focus that was founded in 1986, includes a gorgeous eight-page spread featuring the farm.

The article, which is in the May/June issue, hit subscribers mailboxes last week. You can read the article and see the photos, though, on the magazine’s website.

Written by the magazine’s executive editor, Hannah Agran, the article contains many shots of the blackberry bramble, the Elders and their children, and some of chef Katharine Elder’s edible creations. It even includes recipes for things like blackberry galette, blackberry lemonade and blackberry preserves.

Katharine Elder said that the author first reached out to her in June of 2018, and she was set to travel to Kansas with a crew then. But it was a bad year for blackberries, and the farm’s creamery was just a bunch of concrete at the time. The parties agreed they’d come the next year instead.

They arrived last July, and the timing was perfect. The farm had blackberries galore, and the creamery had just opened. The magazine staff was on-site for two days, “right in the thick of the summer’s excitement,” Katharine said.

Nearly a year later, the piece is out, and we can all drool from home over the results.

“We had a blast with the shoot and are honored to be representing this community in such a fun spread,” Katharine said.
