Favorite Wichita restaurants, closed for weeks, are now cautiously reopening for to-go
A couple of the Wichita-area’s most popular restaurants, which have been closed for weeks, are returning for carryout this week — and one of them was overwhelmed on its first day back.
One is Sabor Latin Bar & Grille — arguably movie star Harrison Ford’s favorite Wichita restaurant — which has been closed for three weeks.
But the restaurant, which is at 309 N. Mead in Old Town Square, is reopening with a limited carryout menu starting on Wednesday, and people will be able to pick up at the curb favorites like queso with corn and breaded grouper tacos.
Sabor, owned by Melad Stephan, is always movie star Ford’s first and last stop when he comes to Wichita every year for flight safety training. Starting Wednesday, the restaurant will be open from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. Call 316-201-4880 to place an order.
Also this week, longtime favorite Pizza John’s in Derby reopened to an overwhelming reception. The restaurant, a regional favorite since it first opened 51 years ago, closed down on March 17 and had teased a return a couple of times before finally getting it done on Monday.
But by early in the evening, the shop at 208 S. Baltimore had become so overwhelmed with orders that it had to stop taking them.
“Proof positive that you have been missed and are an essential business in our community,” one fan wrote on Facebook.
Several other Wichita restaurants that had closed just after coronavirus concerns ramped up have also reopened during the past two weeks. Among them:
