Wichita’s Delano district is about to lose one of its sweetest businesses
A Wichita kindergarten teacher who almost two years opened a Delano bakery as a side job is hanging up her apron.
Ashley Hicks, a kindergarten teacher at Enterprise Elementary, said that her Sweetz N Treatz Bakery is in its final days. The bakery, which she opened it in May 2018 in the former Sugar Sisters spot at 917 W. Douglas, will open for its regular hours through Saturday, then open one more time on Saturday, March 21, so she can say a proper farewell to all of her customers.
The reason for the closing, she said, is that her life has changed since she first opened the bakery with the assistance of her sister, Hillary Hicks.
Today, Ashley is preparing for her wedding in June, and Hillary is due to have a baby in May.
“It breaks our hearts,” Ashley said. “We have so many regular customers, people that come in regularly, but we’re both starting new journeys and we have to reflect on the new journeys to come.”
The good news, Hicks said, is that two other sweet businesses are eyeing the space and she feels sure one of them will move in after she vacates.
In addition to planning her wedding, Hicks said, even while running the bakery she’s been working toward her Master’s in school leadership and has decided her goal is to become a principal.
“One of the things I’ve just been reflecting on is, ‘What is your passion?’” she said. “I love baking, but I love teaching. I think my heart is just really there.”
