Dining With Denise Neil

It flamed out fast in El Dorado, Derby. Now, this taco chain is about to open in Wichita

In just a few days, Wichita will again be one with the famous potato ole.

Opening day for Wichita’s new Taco John’s is Monday. The restaurant will be in the new Kwik Shop at Kellogg and West, which recently opened on the site where Willie C’s and Rowdy Beaver once stood. Although the restaurant will be inside the store, it will have a full Taco John’s menu, a drive-through window and seating inside.

Taco John’s was last in the Wichita market in 2001, when it had a restaurant — billed at the time as the largest in the country — at 8320 W. Central, where CiCi’s Pizza is now. But it was closed by 2002.

Then, a few years ago, the chain returned to the area. A restaurant opened in Derby in February 2018 but closed on Feb. 2 this year. And the Taco John’s restaurant in El Dorado that opened in March of last year was closed by September. Taco Tico then took over the space.

A second Wichita area Taco John’s is planned for the Kwik Shop at 7107 W. 37th St. North and should be ready later this year.

Taco John’s is a Wyoming-based fast taco chain that has nearly 400 restaurants in 23 states, including 18 locations in Kansas. It’s known for its crispy potato oles and fast-food taco menu.

The new Wichita restaurant’s hours will be 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays and 6 a.m. to midnight Fridays and Saturdays. Breakfast will be served daily until 11 a.m.
