Wichita restaurants celebrating Chiefs’ Mahomes by putting ketchup where it doesn’t belong
Remember back a year or so ago when the world learned about Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ obsession with ketchup?
People in the food business do, and now that the Chiefs are headed to the Super Bowl, a couple of them are capitalizing on it.
One is Churn & Burn, the nitro ice cream and coffee shop that has stores at 548 S. Oliver and 11414 E. Central in Wichita. The shop started advertising on social media this week its Mahomes-inspired invention: ketchup ice cream. They plan to keep making it and serving it at both locations until next week.
Owner Christian Shomberg said the flavor is hard to describe. “Everyone has a different take on it,” he said, asking if I was brave enough to try it.
That’s a big no, but I like knowing that it exists.
Another ketchup tribute is being offered on Sunday by Whiskey Dicks, a popular bar and grill at 801 S. Seneca. The bar just posted about its Super Bowl watch party specials, which includes a steak dinner with a 10-ounce KC strip, a side of fries, mac-n-cheese and an individual mini-sized bottle of ketchup for dousing it all.
The condiment craziness, in case you missed it, started in late 2018 when an espn.com profile revealed that the young athlete craves ketchup on his steak. He later admitted that he also likes it on his mac-n-cheese.
A month later, Mahomes had an endorsement deal with Hunts Ketchup.
