Shipping container mall Revolutsia getting one more shop specializing in sweet treats
It’s been closed for nine months.
But this weekend, a colorful Wichita bakery will reopen in a new space with a different focus.
Monica’s Bundt Cake, which closed its shop at 1328 E. Douglas last April, is finally ready to reopen in its new space at Revolutsia, the shopping container mall near Central and Hillside.
When it does, said owner Erica Hernandez, it will have a new approach, focusing less on big, extravagant birthday cakes and more on small-bite sweets that people dining at Revolutsia restaurants like Prost and Taco Locale can pop in and grab. The shop’s grand re-opening is scheduled for noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and will include lots of giveaways from the bakery’s friends and new neighbors at Revolutsia.
Hernandez, who has owned the shop with her husband, Marcos, since buying it from founder Monica Schlegel in 2016, said that the couple never intended to move from their original space. But they came to an impasse with their landlord on Douglas, she said, and decided they’d like to downsize anyway. (Since they left the space last year, Cero’s Candies moved in and moved out, and it’s now vacant.)
The Revolutsia space, which has about 1,000 square feet, is on the lower level on the west side, near Prost, and it has enough space for her bakery and for a display case, where she’ll stock bundt cakes, mini bundt cakes, cupcakes, cookies and brownies.
“We will continue to do birthday cakes,” Hernandez said. “We just won’t be doing extravagant cakes like Monica’s was known for in the past.”
They’re still settling on their hours, she said, but they’ll likely be open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. Although many businesses in Revolutsia are closed on Mondays, Monica’s will likely have shortened hours that day, too, Hernandez said.
Though the shop has been closed since April, the couple started taking and fulfilling orders from customers a few months ago. But they’re ready to get back in their own shop and have their longtime customers come check it out.
“I like it, and I hope everyone else does, too,” Hernandez said.
