Big chicken noodle dinner just one of the comfort-food church fundraisers this weekend
This weekend will be a busy weekend for church dinners in and around Wichita, and among those on the calendar is one of the biggies: the annual Chicken Noodle Dinner at the St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 1356 N. Broadway.
The dinner, now in its 74th year, is a huge undertaking by the church’s members and draws a crowd of around 2,400 people each year. It will run from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, and attendees will be treated to an all-you-can-eat meal of homemade chicken and noodles, mashed potatoes and gravy, coleslaw, bread, pie, cake and drinks. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door for adults, free for children 6 and under.
Church members have been busy for months preparing for the dinner, and the cooking process began a couple of weeks ago. On Jan. 11, church members got together to make egg noodles using more than 3,200 eggs and 800 pounds of flour.
On Thursday, they’ll gather at 3 a.m. to cook 1,000 pounds of poultry, and de-boning will commence at 8:30 a.m. Friday is for gravy making — 30 gallons of it — and starting at 3 a.m. on Saturday, church members will begin cooking their chicken and noodles.
“People just come out of the woodwork and help,” said Robert Scott, one of the dinner’s organizers.
The dinner usually raises about $23,000, which is used by the men’s club and guild to supplement the church budget and finance its missions.
Carry outs also are available. Tickets are available at the door or by calling the church at 316-267-3263.
