Doughnut news in Wichita: One shop closes, one plans opening, Krispy Kreme goes skinny

For such tiny little doughnuts, they sure are producing big news in Wichita of late.

Over the past several days, the city’s mini-doughnut scene has been in flux as one business closes, another announces its plans to open and another — a popular chain — adds the dinky dunkers to its list of offerings.

Here’s the latest:

Closed — The Dapper Doughnut, 701 E. Douglas: It’s been just over a year since Brett and Rebecca Astatt opened their doughnut shop, specializing in mini-doughnuts, coffee and milkshakes. But the business, which was set up in one of the canopies on the plaza at Union Station, is already closed. Brett Astatt said there are many reasons he had to shutter the business but he’s not able to talk about them just yet. He said he would keep me updated.

Opening — Pete’s Donut Shack: Pete Whitlock moved to Wichita from Topeka about a year ago and continued to run his Gourmet Treats business, which sold hard candy, cotton candy and more. But he couldn’t stop thinking about a popular mini-doughnut truck in Topeka and how much people loved it. He decided he’d try one out in Wichita.

Now, Whitlock is working on his Pete’s Donut Shack food trailer, which he hopes to roll out in April. He’ll serve fresh, hot mini cake doughnuts topped with cinnamon and sugar, and hot coffee and hot chocolate will also be on the menu. His plan is to set up at various food-truck friendly venues around town and also to serve at special events. When he works charity events, he said, he plans to give a percentage of his proceeds back to the cause.

His doughnuts will cost $3 for a half dozen, $4 for a dozen and $10 for three dozen. Watch for news of his grand opening event, where he plans to give doughnuts away for free.

Joining the fray — Krispy Kreme: Cutting back for the New Year? Krispy Kreme doesn’t want to be left out of your dieting plans. It’s now offering “minis,” which are tiny, 90-calorie versions of its original doughnuts. They’re available in four flavors: original glazed, chocolate iced with sprinkles, strawberry iced with sprinkles and chocolate iced glazed. During January, people who visit Krispy Kreme from 4 to 7 p.m. on a Monday can try one of the minis for free. Wichita’s participating Krispy Kreme is at 7777 E. Central.
