Dining With Denise Neil

Vacant west Wichita corner that was once home to a restaurant is about to get new life

West Street in Wichita is about to get more coffee.

The northwest corner of West and Maple, which has been vacant since an old restaurant building there was razed in the spring, will soon be home to another Scooter’s Coffee.

The shop will be the fourth Wichita store for Mackenzie Burnett, who also owns the Scooter’s at 3123 N. Rock Road, at 7399 W. Central and at 3480 N. Ridge Road. She also has some Scooter’s stores in Missouri.

She is aiming for a March opening.

The new Scooter’s will be a drive-through-only model with a single window. Customers will order coffee over a speaker, not at the window like at some Scooter’s.

That corner of West and Maple had once been home to a Long John Silver’s, but after that restaurant went out of business, several Mexican restaurants moved in then closed. In May, the Oklahoma owners of the 25,000-square-foot building just south of Hog Wild Pit Bar-B-Que decided to tear it down and look for someone who wanted to lease the land and build something new.
