There’s a new Wichita dessert cafe on Rock Road

There’s a new Wichita cafe specializing in coffee, boba tea, shaved ice cream and dessert.

Sweetpop’s, a project by New York resident and entrepreneur Jimmy Nguyen, opened Monday in the spot at 550 N. Rock Road that was once home to another restaurant specializing in coffee and sweets: Birds on the Roof Cafe. That business was open from August 2013 to February 2015.

Most recently, the space, which is in the same strip center as Dempsey’s Pub East, was home to Wings of the Wind Kites & Toys, which relocated to Paramount Marketplace, 6297 E. 13th St., last year.

The cafe has a menu that features boba and milk tea selections, smoothies and unique coffee drinks like matcha coffee, egg coffee and coconut coffee. It also has several flavors of a unique “sliced” ice cream as well as juices and hot and cold teas. Among the dessert options is an obanyaki cake, which is a round, thick Japanese pastry stuffed with various fillings.

The hours for Sweetpop’s are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. And from now until Sunday, customers can get 15 percent off of everything.

Nguyen also owns with his girlfriend a business in Derby called Venetian Nails and Spa. In addition, he has salons in New York City and a couple of nail businesses in Philadelphia, he said.
