This Greek restaurant closed in 2013, but this weekend, Wichita can taste its food again
Wichitans who crave Greek food got a brief reprieve back in 2013, when an authentic Greek restaurant run by an authentic Greek chef operated for about nine months at 2803 S. Meridian.
That restaurant — called Kosta the Greek — is long gone, but occasionally over the years, people have been able to get some of the dishes they remember, prepared by former owner Kosta Kiosses.
This weekend, it will happen again as part of a fundraiser called Taste of Greece at Kiosses’ church — Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church at 805 N. Dellrose. Kosta has helped organize the sale several times in the past, but this year, it will be a bit different.
Instead of buying Greek specialties a la carte, people will pay $14 for a full Greek meal that includes choice of main dish plus a serving of orzo pasta and a side salad. Items also can be purchased individually. Main dish choices include marinated Greek chicken; skewered pork Soulvaki; Spanikopita, which is a spinach pie; or Tiropita, which is a cheese pie. There will also be kid’s meals.
It happens from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
Much of the food will have been prepared by Kiosses, his wife and his mother-in-law, and other church members also have contributed to the food preparation. There will also be a line up of Greek sweets and baked goods for sale as well as frappe, which is a popular cold Greek coffee.

Kiosses said that organizers are hoping to make the dinner an annual October event.
“We hope that this will go well and we can do this every year and bring Greek food to the people of Wichita,” he said.
People are welcome to take the meals to go or eat in the church’s dining hall. Tours of the church also will be offered at 1, 3 and 6 p.m. on Saturday and at 1 and 3 p.m. on Sunday.
