Owners of Wichita German restaurant opening a German market, closing their food truck

Ever since German restaurant Prost opened in late November at the Revolutsia shipping container mall, it’s been crowded with people hungry for schnitzel and bierocks and German potato salad.

Five months later, owners Manu and Austin English are ready to expand. By the end of May, they plan to open a specialty market right next door to their restaurant. It’ll be called Ze German Markt (which translates to The German Market) and it will sell German groceries and gifts.

The market’s entrance will be just off Prost’s upper-level patio, and the store will be in two shipping containers that are part of the addition on Revolutsia’s west side.

“We had mentioned that we wanted to do something additional here if the opportunity was right and it fit,” Austin English said. “This happened, and they kind of gave us an option, and we thought, ‘Why not?’”

The new market will carry items from Germany like mustard, chocolate, coffee, pickles and sauerkraut. The couple envisions having a cold case that could stock jars of Manu’s famous curry sauce, her homemade cakes and some German breads.

The market has a little balcony off the back, and the couple might set up some small tables where shoppers could sit and enjoy German cake and a cup of German coffee.

The market might also stock German gift items like hats, T-shirts decorated with lederhosen and seasonal items like Christmas ornaments and advent calendars.

“The idea is that this will complement the restaurant and the restaurant will complement this,” Austin English said.

The store would likely be open whenever the restaurant is, he said.

In other Prost news, the Englishes have decided that it’s time to bid farewell to their food truck, Let’m Eat Brats, which gave them their culinary start in Wichita. They opened the truck in 2013 and built a loyal following serving many of the dishes now on the menu at Prost.

Originally, they’d planned to continue with both the truck and the restaurant. But with the addition of the market, Austin said, they’re just too busy.

“It’s an evolution of the business,” he said.

The Englishes are in the process of finding a buyer for the truck. I’ll let you know who ends up with it.
