Jack's Coffee Shop, the rundown but popular Wichita burger restaurant at 6154 S. Hydraulic, has reopened after being closed for three months.

Carrie Coleman, daughter of owner Shirley Coleman, said that her mother has faced a variety of problems since October, when she lost her cook and had to close. She got behind on bills and faced some health issues, too.

She reopened Jack's about a week after it closed in the fall, when Carrie agreed to come help and serve as the cook. But by December, Jack's was closed again.

The family was finally able to reopen a week ago, Carrie said. Old customers are slowly getting the word, and just to make sure no one is confused, Carrie placed a sign lined with lights outside. That's been drawing people in.

Jack’s is a beyond no-frills spot that serves oval-shaped burgers (but no coffee), and has long been a favorite of local burger aficionados in-the-know. It’s known for its simple menu – burgers, chips and “Coke” – and the interior is as rough as the exterior. But people love the well-seasoned, unusually shaped cheeseburgers. Jack’s tops favorite lists of many of Wichita’s most experienced burger eaters.

The restaurant's hours are 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays.
