Well-known Derby restaurant expanding into Wichita, taking over West Kellogg spot

Just before Christmas, the owners of Monterrey Mexican Grill at 5905 W. Kellogg closed their restaurant for good after 13 years in business.

But by the end of next month, the spot should have a new tenant.

Jose Ayala and his family are opening another location of their Derby restaurant, La Hacienda Mexican Restaurant, in the space. They hope to have it open by the end of March, Ayala said.

La Hacienda has operated at 1138 N. Nelson Drive in Derby for four yeas and serves burritos, tacos, enchiladas and chile rellenos as well as less standard dishes like Hawaiian pork tacos, chilaquiles, ceviche and molcajete. Derby-ites give the restaurant good reviews on Facebook, and several rave about its guacamole that’s prepared table-side.

The restaurant also serves many flavors of margaritas plus daiquiris, pina coladas, wine and beer. There’s also a special lunch menu. The menu will be the same in Wichita, and you can see it here. La Hacienda will be open for lunch and dinner.

For now, owners working on remodeling the space to their liking – redoing the bar, putting in a new floor and updating the kitchen equipment.

I’ll let you know when they choose an opening date.
