Wichita Ribest is dead. But Wingapalooza lives.
Intrust Bank Arena officials Friday morning announced details of a new event it will put on in August as a replacement for the Wichita Ribfest, which it discontinued after three disappointing years.
The chicken wing event is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Aug. 15 inside the arena on the main floor and will feature all-you-can-eat wings prepared by Wichita-area restaurants and chefs. Attendees also can enjoy a beer garden stocked with local craft beer.
The arena plans to have at least 20 vendors and already has commitments from The Anchor, Douglas Avenue Chop Shop, Joe’s Old Town Bar & Grill, Wing Stop and The Monarch. Participants will complete for two awards: a People’s Choice award and a “Lord of the Wings” judge’s choice award.

SMG, which manages Intrust Bank Arena, has put on similar, successful wing events in other towns where it manages venues, said Christine Pileckas, the arena’s director of sales and marketing manager. It addresses many of the complaints attendees had about the Ribfest, including the lack of local vendors and the inability of attendees to sample food from multiple vendors without spending extra money.
Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door. They’ll go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday at the Intrust bank Arena box office, at 316-755-7328 at www.selectaseat.com and at Select-A-Seat outlets.
