Turnout for inaugural taco event is overwhelming
It’s been operating at the corner of Central and Zoo Boulevard, a tough corner for restaurant survival, since June 2015.
But now, the owners of the unique Wichita Mexican restaurant Los Compadres have found a new spot, and they’re preparing to move the business.
Carlos Renteria and Jaime Martinez plan to relocate their restaurant, which specializes in blue corn tortillas and authentic Mexican dishes, in a spot just west of Knolla’s Pizza at the corner of 13th and West streets. They’re taking over the large space that once held Maggie’s Scotch and Soda, which sits in the Woodbridge Center 3827 W. 13th St. The sign is already up in the center’s parking lot.
They hope to have the transition made by mid-November.
“We definitely wanted to accommodate more of our customers with a nicer and with a bigger place,” Renteria said. “Where we’re at is nice and cozy, but sometimes it’s a little too cozy.”
The free-standing building at 3302 W. Central where Los Compadres opened a year and four months ago has been home to a revolving door of restaurants over the years, including Jrs Tex Mex Grill, El Tenampa and Burger Barn. It seats a maximum of 45 people. The new spot will accommodate about 120.
The duo hope to close for no more than a couple of days while they make the move from one restaurant to the next. When they open the new place, they’ll have a full bar (right now they serve beer only) and some specialty margaritas.
They plan to add a few more meat options and also will have a space for small gatherings.
Los Compadres’ owners have the lease on their current building until March and will try to use it as an event space for small parties where they will cater food. If that works out, they’ll hang on to the building.
I’ll let you know when the move is complete.
