Ty’s Diner, one of the best places in Wichita to eat a cheeseburger and fries and keep smelling like a cheeseburger and fries until your next shower, is changing its hours for the first time in its 60-plus year history.
Starting on May 1, the burger joint at 928 W. Second St. N. will begin experimenting with weekend dinner hours and will open from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday evenings. Since it opened in the early 1950s, Ty’s has been a lunchtime-only restaurant.
Owner Kristen Hale said that her customers have been telling her for years that they’d like to have the option of eating Ty’s burgers, chicken strips, pork tenderloin and fresh-cut fries for the evening meal, too.
“A lot of people say they’d love to come and see us, but they work during the day,” she said.

The new hours will be 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and 5 to 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.
Hale and her husband Dave, longtime Ty’s employees, took it over the diner in 2012.
